About Lana Crooks

We begin the first custoMONDAY of 2009 with a first for the series: plush. And who better to kick things off than full-time plushinator, Lana Crooks? As the proprietor of Crookedart, Lana spends her time between freelance illustration, costume and set design for film and TV, visual design for retail and, of course, making unique soft sea creatures and skeletons. Over the past couple months, we’ve blogged about her pieces in group and solo shows. Lana’s work has been shown at A.Okay Official (where she is also a curator), Get Knifed Gallery and Gallery1988, to name a few. You can view her creations 24/7 online at Tor Gallery. The best place to keep tabs on the busy artist is at her Crooked Art blog, and if you like what you see, you can pick up her plushes in LA at Munky King. Or, you could win one right now. Which brings us to…

“He was joking on the starting blocks.
He reacted last to the gun.
He ran against the wind.
He didn’t tie his PUMAs.
He jogged over the finish line.
He broke the world record.
And then he danced.
And reminded us that
Being the best should be fun.”

This is One Delicious Shoe

Yum…the Nike Air Max 90 burger by artist Olle Hemmendorff. This burger “shoe” was commissioned by Nike who wanted artists to interpret their shoes in art, thankfully Olle realized that there is no better medium than a dozen or so all beef patties on a sesame seed bun. ESPNZone needs to figure out a way to serve this, it might be the only way I stop in one of those. Mmmmm burgers…

“No Comply” Skateboard Art Show

Friday, January 2, 2009 11:09
Posted in category Art, Gallery Shows

No Comply is an annual skateboard art show in Melbourne, Australia now in its forth year. We all know art and skate decks go together like bread and buttah, so naturally we’re hyped that this year’s lineup had over 70 artists, including the likes of Artless, Cey Adams, Cycle, Cope, Keith Ciarmello, Lessley Repettaux (work shown above) Shaunna Peterson, SheOne, KRINK (work below) Brad Eastman, and more.
Originally slated to open in December, the show was postponed to mid-January due to “an epic amount of dust and nearby construction which has rendered the gallery space unusable.” Woah, that must be some supersonic dust. “The good news is that the extra time means that we’re getting more new artists on board and pretty much super-sizing the show and layout,” write the folks at No Comply.
If Australia is a bit out of reach for you, the entire show with images of all the artwork as well as artist biographies is up online at www.nocomply.com.au

5-DSC_2079-Edit

Here’s a look at Amanda Visell’s clever custom Rainbowsaurus.  She’s taken Bwana Spoons’s recently dropped resin from Switcheroo and given it a bright almost neon rainbow with storm-like clouds.  And since this is Amanda, she’s gone to work with her trusty wood saw and fashioned two slightly different planes to take the place of the standard resin birds. Contact Amanda via email @ amanda[at]amandavisell[dot]com   if you’re interested in the custom.   More pics after the jump.
