TBA Interview | One On One With Fafi

Let’s face it – street art has dominated the mainstream population for ages. With highlighted artists leaving their carbon footprint in the world of art, French artist Fafi has dominated the scene with her sultry trademark ‘Fafinettte’ characters that have captured the hearts of many. This time around Fafi has been working hard in the lab, with her latest project that is surely bound to set the scene come 2010.

TBA Interview | One On One With Fafi

TBA: Hi Fafi, thank you for taking the time out for giving TrashBagAesthetics.com an interview! We greatly appreciate it! So you’ve been working on your comic book which is said to be dropping next year (2010) can you tell us about the comic book, and what gave you the inspiration to go fourth with such a dynamic project?

Fafi: Well, I was fed up with drawing or painting only ladies, I guess I arrived at some point where I wanted to get them to live in another dimension. The more I was giving those information about how I was seeing us (young girls/women) the more I seem to inspire people. I couldn’t be satisfied with only this, I also wanted the girls that I was inspiring to believe they were part of something bigger. One day, I was taking a nap and I put myself in a strange state of mind, between sleepiness and being awake. I thought I had to come up with other characters, and a full world for them to evolve in.

TBA: So you pretty much evolved in creating more characters for your comic book. We’re quite sure that it will be a hit! A lot of women across the globe – admire your work ethic and artistic technique. Will this be one of many comic books, or just a test run? And how long has this idea been in the works?

Fafi: I have been working on it since November 2007! It’s the first part of something that can go on forever, I have so many other characters to introduce… at the end of this first part, I am really craving to follow up with the second.

TBA: It has been said ” If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it!” – with that notion in mind, pushing the boundaries of creating uber-sexy and yet playful characters, have you ever wanted to step out of your shell and create something entirely new? Perhaps more masculine characters?

Fafi: This is why I created the Carmine Vault, it’s another planet another dimension where all my characters live. The comic is just a support for me to explain to people what it is. The Fafinettes for example are characters like others, I also have Birtak, Hmilo, the Hillminis, each with a specific behavior, feelings…. It’s really never-ending. sex isn’t very important here, they are just creatures.

TBA: I guess you can say that here in the (US), Art – whether it be fine, digital, or graffiti always manages to focus on the sexual aspect. But you’ve managed to cover all stereotypes. With characters such as Birtak, Hillminis, & Hmilo – we’ve always been curious as to know, what were your initial thoughts on creating those specific characters?

Fafi: You are right! Exactly at the point where I realized I could do sexy Fafinettes all my life and be happy with it… I wondered if I really wanted to please myself in that comfy atmosphere. This is when I decided to invent Hmilo, and the light for that discovery was Mehdi. I was setting up at exhibition in L.A and I had a lot of difficulty to paint my canvases. Not to paint them of course, but I was painting them like automatically, I told myself this shouldn’t be this way, and Mehdi put his fingers where it hurts, asking me the right questions. Well it’s just that it’s a lot of circumstances that brings you to some point. It’s me and my graffiti habits for 10 years – the envy to excel in what I do.

TBA: Coming from a professional artistic standpoint, do you think that the art world has become some what TOO commercialized? Where as self proclaimed art connoisseurs truly don’t pay attention to detail – they’re just basing their new found love with art strictly on what’s “hot” right now?

Fafi: Speculation is one of the reason I am not doing exhibitions right now! I prefer to design a sneaker for Adidas that I know is going to be worn by someone who loves what I do, than selling a canvas to someone who is going to store it for two years until an auction.

TBA: Wow…that is a very powerful statement to the fullest degree! Before we go further into the next question, can I ask – would you ever consider having your characters go into motion on the silver screen?

Fafi: I hope someone will love the comic so much that we could do it at some point, but I will be such a pain in the ass for the rendering ! I already had an experience in animation for the Mark Ronson / Lily Allen video a couple of years ago, and I know now what I want! My drawings require at lot of textures, outlines, it is very imprecise, the 3D technic is not something that I like right now, but it’s constantly evolving…. who knows!

TBA: Fafi fans recognize is your consistent use of texture – intricate strokes and all of the above. We’ve been always curious as to know how did you deal with the comparisons made to you versus Miss Van. Some would consider your work to be on a similar plane…but with a slightly different technique.

Fafi: Miss Van’s an amazing painter, she is super good, beautiful lines and colors, she really is a fine artist. She has more of a dark gothic side than me, and now than I am on a mission with my Carmine Vault’s, I think we really belong to two distinct universes.

TBA: Other than your comic book, are there any upcoming projects or collaborations in the near future?

Fafi: I have some really cool stuff coming next autumn, it’s gonna be my best collab’ since I’ve started, something to wear and to front in – in order to really finish my comic the soonest as possible, I only took one project for 2009, so I was forced to make it good !

TBA: Your no stranger to collaborations! With MAC cosmetics, Adidas, Lesportsac, and a long list of heavy hitting collaborations under your belt – which brand would you consider working with? If given a specific choice.

Fafi: I would love to do a collaboration with Globe-trotter, or with a great jeweler. I would also love to do a collaboration also with Codognato.

TBA: What do you think is the biggest misconception about Fafi? And want to set the record straight about for those who don’t actually know the lady behind the Fafinette’s?

Fafi: I am OK with misconceptions if they are some, I don’t have to justify myself, people who are going to meet me will love me to death.
