Ivy League Trilogy – Button Up, Get Down To Business – The Oxford Shirt

-The Kennedys – Ivy League Originals-

Oxford shirts, college style sweaters, brogues and a decent pair of leisure pants are a staple in every genuine male wardrobe. They radiate an air of understated sophistication and timeless classicism, that makes even the most unruly rascal seem like an affiliated and beneficial member of society. Here it doesn’t matter if you actually have an academic background, or if you dropped out of highschool to pursue the career of an eternal bartender – once again the comforting camouflage of fashion makes us all equals..

The term originated from Americas „Anchient Eight“, the East-Coast based elite universities Brown, Columbia, Cornell, Dartmouth, Harvard, Princeton, Penn and Yale, its stilistic roots however lead way back into the annals of Great Britians university uniforms. A former testament of priviledged upbringing, exquisite education and most likely family wealth, Ivy League today suggests ingenuity and diversity, whilst being part of a bigger picture, now being accessible to everyone with a certain tastefulness and appreciation of quality.

Sony Pictures has hired none other than Aaron Sorkin to write the screenplay and adaptation of Walter Isaacson’s bestselling book ‘Steve Jobs’. Many of you might have seen Ashton Kutcher running around town in his Steve Jobs outfit, but whatever he is filming at the moment, has nothing to do with this official adaptation. Sorkin was also responsible for adapting the book ‘The Accidental Billionaires’, which becoma on the big screen ‘The Social Network’. He won an Oscar for that in fact. (Via Variety)

Carhartt Fall/Winter 2012 Collection Lookbook

Carhartt Fall/Winter 2012 Collection Lookbook

After already having presented the Carhartt Heritage Fall/Winter 2012 Lookbook, we move on today and take a closer look at the mainline of the brand. Carhartt has been celebrating a strong comeback these recent years, due to a general heritage trend, but also strong collaborations, mainly in the Japanese market. After all they produce still today quality goods with decent prices and therefore we are not complaining.

Strong accent colors and patterns that we have seen before in collaborations and the heritage line, now also end up in the mainline. We really like the new outerwear, the patterned shirts, and of course Carhartt classics in new colors and patterns. All in all a well balanced collection, just like we are used to see from Carhartt WIP.

Check out the full lookbook after the jump.

Ebon Heath x Villeroy & Boch – The Second Glance Project

Ebon Heath x Villeroy & Boch - The Second Glance Project

In an interesting new project, iconic Germany brand Villeroy & Boch has teamed up with typographic artist Ebon Heath for the Second Glance Project. Presented last week in Berlin, the special collaboration between the artist and the brand, which was originally founded in 1748, was celebrated with an exhibition at Seven Star Gallery, showcasing the outcoming products.

Among many others, ceramics are still an expertise of Villeroy & Boch, known for their premium bathroom products. As such, the bathroom sink was the object that the artist started working on. Aside from a beautiful resulting product, the artist’s intuitive creativity meets and clashes with the clear structures and predetermined manufacturing steps of a company that is usually confined to a strict production framework and narrowly defined schedules.

The result is an interdisciplinary collaboration with clear mutual benefits: Inspired by Villeroy & Boch’s material and décor expertise, Ebon Heath went on to create several further Second Glance works, a. o. a poem-turned-mobile (Typographic Mobiles) blending Villeroy & Boch’s core competency (ceramics) with Heath’s pronounced penchant for typography. The resulting installation comprises 166 individual ceramic letters – fashioned into the seven lines and title of his Second Glance poem – and was assembled especially for the occasion.

Besides selected LoopArt creations, the event last week also presented the above-mentioned mobiles and bespoke jewelry, both fashioned from ceramic letters, as well as a short film on the design process behind this unusual – and unusually fruitful – collaboration. Watch the movie here below.

Ebon Heath tells us in our interview that he “… started talking (with Villeroy & Boch) over 2 years ago through PCH Innovations. PCH was the connecting point, having worked with Villeroy and me already before. At the time we were just talking about a design job, basically me designing a pattern for Villeroy. From there is just kept on growing.”

Villeroy & Boch has a tradition in the arts, has always promoted and supported the arts and as such the project was challenging, yet felt very natural to both sides. PCH Innovations made sure that the artistic world of Ebon Heath and the business world of Villeroy & Boch worked efficiently together, while making both sides feel comfortable with each other. The fact that Villeroy & Boch employees were involved into the project, innovating outside of their usual duties, makes the project even more interesting and exciting. The result of that innovation was the 3D application of Ebon Heath’s pattern on the sinks.

Ebon Heath explains that “it was interesting that it was not just me making a sink, but really them making art with me. It really was a two way exchange. I created a sink for them and they created art for me. They can put me on their poster and I can put them on my artwork. This makes it a true artist project, as I am not just putting my signature under something.”

True innovation happens when different value systems and strings of thought meet, which was the case in this project. Something seemingly simple to the outsider was actually a big step for both the artist and the brand. Remaining true to yourself, while doing something entirely new, is the difficulty with good innovation.

Watch the video here below to get a further behind the scenes look at the project.

Die Guillotine by Iman Rezai and Rouven Materne

Die Guillotine by Iman Rezai and Rouven Materne

Our contemporary notion of art generally endorses an abstract analysis of our daily realities and pillories any vestige of nonreflective and unfiltered criticism (pun intended). Even the more surprising and fantastic, that it is exactly the dull and candid hate the work “DIE GUILLOTINE” by Iman Rezai and Rouven Materne provokes from its online audience, that propelles the piece to what it is: a substantial reflection and justifiable comment on our modern democratic society.

The two UdK Master Students built a giant polychromatic, toy-like yet fully functional guillotine, putting their online audience in the position to decide over a sheep’s life or death. Via online vote the spectator can become a mediate executioner or repriever of the animal. Or stay a detached bystander, of course. You can still vote today here.

Opus Hong Kong by Frank Gehry

opus frank gehry 0 Opus Hong Kong by Frank Gehry

Today we present the finished Opus Hong Kong building by super star architect Frank Gehry. Staying true to his unique style, the newly finished residential building in the mountains of Hong Kong is both in terms of format, materials and in terms of design once again an eye catcher.

“the high-rise’s helical external structure reduces the need for load-bearing walls, which allows the open-plan apartments to flow around a central core. the sinuous façade of the tower is composed almost entirely of glass creating a surface of delicacy against the rich green of the hillside filling the interiors with light. the exterior of the building turns as it rises giving the rooms a unique floor plan and its own spectacular outlook of the city below and the landscape. each suite has a series of balconies conceived as ‘boat decks’ that are carefully orientated to make the most of the dramatic panorama.

the structure is grounded in an array of artfully stacked planter boxes clad in spanish stone that highlight the ascending spiral of the glass-clad columns. the southwest and southeast corners of the building are expressed as two solid towers finished in amber stone. they accommodate the kitchen and utility rooms and also reduce exposure to glare during sunrise and sunset.”

Take a tour of the building after the jump.
