What does the future hold for sneaker aficionados? If London-based material researcher and designer Shamees Aden has her way, we’ll no longer have to worry about scuffing our footwear, as our kicks would be 3D printed with synthetic biological material — or protocells — that could regenerate overnight. No, those protocells aren’t alive, but they but can be combined to create living organisms. According to Aden, “The cells have the capability to inflate and deflate and to respond to pressure.” But because of their special properties, the second-skin shoes would need a little more maintenance than your typical sneaker. “You would take the trainers home and you would have to care for it as if it was a plant,” Aden says, “making sure it has the natural resources needed to rejuvenate the cells.” She added the concept footwear could become reality by 2050.

Rumors of a carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) roof panel are confirmed, which combine with aluminum hood and front panels to shed 83 pounds from its M3 Coupe predecessor. Last season, the dispatches emanating from the Los Angeles Clippers locker room painted a scene of growing discord between point guard Chris Paul and high-flying forward Blake Griffin. It’s probably a good sign, then, that the feud is now comedic fodder at the hands of Kids Foot Locker, whose latest commercial stars the most recognizable names from the Clippers franchise. The clip sees CP3 taking over Griffin’s adjoining locker to accommodate all the newly purchased Kids Foot Locker gear for Lil’ Chris. Meanwhile, Blake Griffin’s spot is relegated to a new locker room that’s sorely lacking in the luxury accoutrements of most NBA facilities. Check out the video below.

While sneaker-based art pieces are nothing new, Amara Por Dios has come up with a bright new idea that involves repurposing sneakers for household use. The Swedish artist applies her signature spray paint or acrylic paint designs on any kind of sneaker — be it an Air Jordan 1 or adidas Superstar — to create “LuminAir” lamps. They feature the sneaker as the base, finished in custom paint splatters or ornate patterns that use vivid hues, and are topped off with hand-crafted lamp shade in a matching theme. Check out examples of the artist’s work below, and find the lamps available for purchase through her site.

Andy and Lana Wachowski — the sibling creators behind the Matrix trilogy — return to sci-fi with the upcoming Jupiter Ascending. The follow-up to last year’s Cloud Atlas, the film stars Mila Kunis as Jupiter, a downtrodden housemaid who’s destined for greater things — think savior of the universe — as long as she manages to stay alive long enough to realize her cosmic inheritance. That’s where Channing Tatum’s Caine comes in, a “genetically engineered ex-military hunter” charged with tracking down Jupiter and ultimately pulling back the curtain on her true identity. Warner Bros. has unveiled the official trailer today, revealing an early look at project that Lana Wachowski characterizes as a “science-fiction space opera.” Check it out below.
Jupiter Ascending is scheduled to hit theaters July 25, 2014.
