Finders Keepers, Losers Weepers…

… or so I would say as a young child that discovered a neglected Barbie in the sandbox. Reminding us of our younger years, Finder Keepers has put out some precious playsuits for the spring with pops of color and ladylike detailing. The brand is yet another Aussie label to land on the North American scene this past year and we are embracing its colorful, girly styles with open arms. Left to right: the Let Love Down Playsuit, the Runaway Playsuit, the Blueberry Kisses Playsuit, and the Electric Kiss Playsuit.

Design Radar: Little Printer

Click here to view the embedded video.

In an attempt to marry our digital and physical lives, BERG has been developing a mini-newspaper printer for over a year, not surprisingly called Little Printer. Though the product has taken criticism for being a step backwards in an increasingly virtual age, I love the concept of wirelessly transmitting personally curated content to a cute-to-boot printer. As much as I rely on the web for organization, for me there is no substitute for a Post-It or notebook full of to-do lists (nope not even phone apps). The output is the width of a receipt and 10 inches at the longest, with news, tweets, memos, and games for you to share and handle. The intro video is cute, so you should definitely watch it. Do you think this will ever be an item on your wishlist?

Steal Her Style: Blonde Bombshell Jennifer in Valley of the Dolls

Jacqueline Susann’s decades-old hit, Valley of the Dolls (1966), holds an iconic place in the legacy of 20th-century American literature. Anyone familiar with the book and its abridged film adaptation (1967) probably agrees that the novel’s quality is soap opera drama at best. However, its characters and storyline are a enticing relic of the mid-century heyday of Hollywood glamour and New York society. Jennifer North, played by Sharon Tate, is the sex kitten in this saga of 3 best friends’ rise to fame and subsequent self-destruction involving “dolls,” a vintage slang term for prescription pills. The blonde bombshell character is more complicated than meets the eye, and is swiftly caught up in the superficial world of the entertainment elite where relationship and health pressures eventually lead to the gorgeous showgirl’s suicide. Coincidentally, the life of Tate was devastatingly cut short when she was murdered in 1969 by Charles Manson followers in the home of her husband, Roman Polanski.

Jennifer’s style in the film was characterized by feminine, breezy outfits that increasingly played in to her SoCal persona. Try out long maxi dresses with vintage influences like the halter top Gypsy Maxi Dress by lovers + friends or the confection pink Mrs Lacey Dress from *Vintage Boutique. We can envision Jen sunning by the pool in the South of France Antoinette Maxi Dress by Wildfox and the Lori Hat by Cheap Monday. Finally, a true vixen always stocks romantic loungewear and attention grabbing baubles… relax at home with the Vintage Robe and the Tzarna Princess Spike Stud, both by Betsey Johnson.

Peep Show: and the Answer is…

the Clever Beans Dress by Quiksilver! The proud new owner of this flirty cotton sundress is Stacy Oslie. A big thanks to all you sleuthing folks who participated, and stay tuned for what we have next.

While you wait for the next Peep Show to launch, check out Quiksilver‘s Spring 2012 lookbook below. The collection was based on a “map-less adventure” where the tastemakers behind the brand rediscovered natural beauty found in desert trails, succulent-filled gardens and calm paddles out to sea. Each perfect day was punctuated with a poetic sunset vista; the varied patterns and easy fits of the line are proof of their inspirational goal.

Photo of the Week: 2.13.2012

Eyes: the window to Prabal’s soul? New York Fashion Week is in full effect and this weekend I was mesmerized by the powerful sapphire blue makeup in Prabal Gurung‘s FW 2012 collection. The above shot of Candice Swanepoel, taken by Nina Westervelt (MCV Photo, via Refinery29), captures a behind-the-scenes moment that was likely more erratic than it appears. Candice is the face of his Spring 2012 campaign, and this striking beauty look reinforces the link between the transformative model and the popular designer.

Karmaloop + New Brahmin Present: BEAUTY SCHOOL!

Click here to view the embedded video.

Karmaloop is back in the beauty game with our friends over at New Brahmin and we are thrilled to show you this tutorial series! Watch our inaugural clip with makeup artist Rose Fortuna showing you how to prep a smooch-able lip for upcoming Valentine’s Day.

Rosie is one fiery chick on a life mission to make pretty, but she can’t fix ugly — that’s an inside job. Wishing you all a super sweet V-day (but not so sweet that your teeth fall out from overeating candy), she hopes that these two sultry lip options suit your pucker on this most romantic night.

For her natural, pouty nude technique, you need:

  • neutral lip liner, about 2 shades deeper than your natural lip tone
  • nude gloss

Simply line your lip then fill it in with the same liner — this will act as a primer for the next step… which is shellacking on a layer of nude gloss! Only marginally more time consuming than swiping on chapstick but adds a whole lot of oomph.

For a punchy jolt of color, the bold red lip involves:

  • an angle brush to line and fill
  • a bright lipcolor (your choice)
  • a semi-sheer lipgloss
  • flat brush and concealer
  • optional: a shade lighter or brighter than the lipcolor you’re using (we played around with silver)

Use the angle brush to line and fill your lip with color; we like this process because it is precise. Start from the corner of your lip, as starting in the middle can give you an exaggerated clown-lip effect (scary).

Build color to your liking and add semi-sheer gloss to finish. To ensure your work stays put, buff around the negative lip line with concealer and a flat brush. Not sure what that means? Just study Rose in the clip!

Finally, if you want to amp up the look further tap the 2nd shade at the center of your lip for dimension.

Voila! Your lips will be so scrumptious that a makeout seash is guaranteed, at which point you will probably ruin your makeup. But hey! We aren’t miracle workers over here! At least we got you there, or so we’d like to think. ♥

Vice Puppies in Bondage: Not as Bad as it Sounds

We swear that this Vice bondage puppy show isn’t as terrible as it sounds, though PETA would probably disagree. Kicking off New York Fashion Week, our favorite anything-goes culture mag took over The Westway (a hipster-approved former strip club) to commemorate the release of its fashion issue. As Annette Lamothe-Ramos, Vice‘s fashion editor noted, “No one hates sexy puppies.” Can’t say I disagree… recently my pup walked into the room wearing a thong for a necklace and it was Hilarious (yes, with a capital H). Our canine friends may very well be more sartorially experimental than we give them credit for. Led across a stage by a leather-clad escort, the dogs coolly paraded in their bondage wears to the pleasure of human onlookers. We’re guessing the furry friends were compensated in the form of Eskimo kisses, belly rubs, and Pup-eroni.

As spring trickles in, one resurgent trend we are ready to devour is citrus print, coming in exciting variations of color, fruits, and flora. Spotted on Stella McCartney’s spring 2011 runway, the quirky patterns served as inspiration for another major fashion house this season: Dolce & Gabbana. Usually when a fad strikes twice you know it has some longevity (velvet is a good example), so without further ado, I present you citrus pieces from RVCA and Joyrich! Which juicy item would you rather rock?
