Complex names Kanye West’s “Can’t Tell Me Nothing” as Best Song of the Decade

In Complex's recently released list of 'The 100 Best Songs of The Complex Decade,' they gave the top overall spot to Kanye West's 2007 single "Can't Tell Me Nothing." Serving as the lead single off West's third studio album Graduation, and nominated  for Best Rap Song at the 50th Grammy Awards, the song definitely has a place in all hip hop fan's hearts. While the song did lose the Grammy to another song by West "Good Life," Complex makes a case for "Can't Tell Me Nothing" by stating:

If there were one song to describe Kanye West and his career, this would be it. A statement, a promise, and a motto, "Can't Tell Me Nothing" set the tone for his defiant third album, Graduation, and gave West his first-ever street anthem.

Attaining the almost impossible, this track resonated with hip-hop purists, college dropouts, and trap stars alike. Recruiting the red-hot DJ Toomp to co-produce the track and inviting Jeezy to add his patented ad-libs was the icing on the cake. This was the exact moment in West's career when he went from rapper to international superstar.

Below you can check out the Top 10 honorees, while the full list is available by clicking here.

Complex Magazine Beats Up Justin Bieber

Complex Magazine Beats Up Justin Bieber

Complex Magazine is celebrating its 10th Anniversary next month and has of course a special issue in the pipeline for the occasion. You can see that Justin Bieber’s management is desperately trying to make the young star look more mature. A first attempt we have seen in the recent V Magazine cover story, where Bieber had been outfitted with high fashion and it all just looked a little ridiculous and forced. Compared to that we certainly prefer Complex’s take. The star gets beat up for the cover shoot, which was produced by photographer Tony Kelly. Complex editor Joe La Puma follows Bieber from France to Miami and gets a glimpse into the life of the star. So, do you think Complex has done a better job at giving Bieber a more grown up image?

You can read the cover story here.

More pictures from the shoot and a behind the scenes video follow after the jump.

A couple of weeks ago the Complex Magazine crew headed out to the desert in California to shoot Kid Cudi and Dot Da Genius for a digital cover for their new rock project WZRD. In the accompanying interview, they speak about how the duo started recording music in Dot’s family’s apartment when Cudi was evicted, and how Dot’s parents family took Cudi in. Cudi also speaks candidly on a number of topics including: his daughter; Ben Breedlove, the young man who said Cudi was his favorite rapper in a video shortly before he died from cardiac arrest; Jamie, the subject of his song “Teleport 2 Me, Jamie” and his “Pink” tattoo that represents the troubled fictional character Pink Floyd came up with in “The Wall.” You can read the full story at Complex.

Lana Del Rey Covers Complex Feb/March 2012 Issue

Lana Del Rey Covers Complex Magazine-01
For their February/March 2012 issue (also starring A$AP Rocky & Jeremy Scott) Complex hooked up with rising star Lana Del Rey on a killer cover.

Hers was a dramatic setup.

White balloons flashing corroded cartoon clips and ghostly images of President John F. Kennedy—all set to the creepy strains of Bernard Herrmann’s Pyscho theme. The fans kept coming through the door, filling New York’s Bowery Ballroom to capacity. The band stood at attention, poised for action as Lana Del Rey strolled on stage to squeals and whistles. Dressed in a summery white dress, gold belt, and low white Chuck Taylors, the tall red-haired singer looked more like she was ready to grab an ice-cream sandwich from Mr. Softee than perform her first proper concert in NYC.

And then the trouble began.

The issue officially hits stands on February 7, but you can read the full cover story here now.

More images follow after the click.

ASAP Rocky and Jeremy Scott Cover Complex’s Feb/March 2012 Issue

ASAP Rocky and Jeremy Scott Cover Complex's Feb/March 2012 Issue

The first new issue of Complex Magazine for 2012 is about to hit newsstands and none other than ASAP Rocky and Jeremy Scott have gotten the cover story. One of the most hyped young rappers and always much discussed fashion designer Jeremy Scott certainly make for an interesting match.

“Complex: Why do you think hip-hop is so fascinated with fashion and vice versa?

A$AP ROCKY: As black people it was our thing to show that we’re not living in poverty and that we can afford extravagant things—that kind of stuck with us. So when our great-grandparents were putting on their favorite outfits, it was to put on a front for the hard time. And hip-hop is a bunch of people that never had nothing. Fashion is just an expression. It’s an art. It expresses your taste. Good taste is important in hip-hop. I wake up saying I’m going to look the best I can and do what the fuck I want to do. And that’s what it’s all about. I don’t know if I articulated it good because im pretty high right now—and I have a lisp and I’m going to Mars right now.

Jeremy Scott: [Laughs]. The thing is hip-hop is one of the only communities that really started its own trends.

A$AP ROCKY: Wow.

Jeremy Scott: That’s why I’ve always been inspired by hip-hop artists, because they transform things—even just the jean, turning it around, inside out, sagging it—all these different things. Yes, of course we get little things from other music movements, but hip-hip has been like, Pow! It’s really inspiring and it’s the only new music that has come along in eons. Rock and roll has been around—it’s changing forms. But hip-hip is major.”

You can read the full cover story here.

Check out the photoshoot featuring both ASAP Rocky and Jeremy Scott after the jump.

Complex Cut & Show: J. Crew’s Men’s Shops | Video

Complex Cut & Show: J. Crews Mens Shops | Video

Once the darling among catalog merchants, J. Crew started its expansion beyond the glossy pages with a series of brick & mortar storefronts in the late 1980s. The hope was to capitalize the already well known name to a new set of customer base, and it did just that. However, in the midst of this growth, the stores themselves became much like any other retail chain, with cookie-cutter designs and lackluster atmospheres. To transform each of them into more than just a storefront but a destination, the label’s new Creative Director at the time, Jenna Lyons, and Head of Men’s Design Frank Muytjens went back to the fundamentals. Both curtailed the usage of “one size fits all” and instead created a space most suitable for each location’s demographic, starting with the now iconic Liquor Shop in TriBeCa. Hear Lyons and Muytjens talk of re-designing the ’s Men’s Shops in their own words on this latest episode of Complex Cut & Show video series.
