Damon Albarn Is Working on a Solo Album

While there has been lots of discussion about the future of Blur and Gorillaz, Damon Albarn has now revealed that he is working on a solo album. In a conversation with BBC Radio 4's Front Row the British musician shared that he is currently spending time in the recording studio crafting solo material that will result in a solo offering.

"This week we're mucking around with these Russian synthesizers in a very loose mind of doing some kind of record under my name. I suppose you could call it a solo record, but I don't like that word. It sounds very lonely - solo. I don't really want to be solo in my life. But yeah, I'm making another record."

He also commented on his association with the Olympics and Blur's upcoming concert at the Hyde Park on August 12, labeling it "for London" rather than as a celebration of the games. The gig has been put on to coincide with the closing ceremony of the Olympic games, although Albarn states that he is not too ken to be involved with the games.

"The corporate side I find a bit depressing. There's too much of it [sponsorship]. A lot of people see it differently. We're putting on another celebration for the official closure of the Olympic Games. But we're putting it on for London and people who hopefully want to sing their hearts out in a park. I'm signed up to the idea of regeneration in London and putting on a good account of ourselves; definitely."

Damon Albarn hints at the end of Blur and Gorillaz

There is no doubt that Damon Albarn is taking it easy these days. The famed English musician has been busy in the studio with the likes of Bobby Womack, Dr. Dee, and Rocket Juice & the Moon during the past few months. However, it seems that he won't be working on his two most known bands, Blur and Gorillaz, anymore. In an conversation with The Guardian, Albarn said that he believes Blur's summer gig in London's Hyde Park will be the band's last. When asked about the reason for this he said:

"I find it very easy to record with Graham [Coxon]. He's a daily musician. With the other two, , Alex James and Dave Rowntree. it's harder for them to reconnect. You know what I mean? It's fine when we play live – it's really magical still – but actually recording new stuff, and swapping musical influences… it's quite difficult."

It is also very likely that there won't be any new music from the Gorillaz neither, due to creative differences regarding the Plastic Beach tour between him and co-creator Jamie Hewlett, who decided to end the band:

"Jamie thinks the band is done, which is fair enough. I think we were at cross purposes somewhat on that last record, which is a shame. So until a time comes when that knot has been untied…It was one of those things," Albarn says. "The music and the videos weren't working as well together, but I felt we'd made a really good record, and I was into it. So we went and played it."

Gorillaz' "DoYaThing," the Converse song featuring James Murphy and Andre 3000, was released in February.
