In a move reminiscent of the antics of Bill Veeck during his tenure as head man in charge of the Chicago White Sox, two of the more buzzed about franchises in the NBA – the Miami Heat and Brooklyn Nets – will sport player’s nicknames on the back of jerseys during at least one meeting between the teams next year. Expect names like King James, Jesus Shuttlesworth, The Truth and KG – all league approved options to be likely choices. AP reports, “It shows growth in our league and it shows we do adapt to what’s going on around us,” said Allen, the Heat guard who plans to wear Shuttlesworth on his jersey, a nod to his character from the He Got Game film. “And we’re still kids, playing a kids’ game. Even though we’re now men playing a kids’ game, we still remember where we come from. Everybody had a nickname and it’s a way to let the fans in a little bit more.” Here’s hoping Brian Scalabrine comes out of retirement so he can sport “white mamba.”
Topping off succession of special editions for the 2012 NBA All-Star Game are the signature footwear for Jordan Brand athletes Dwyane Wade, Carmelo Anthony and Chris Paul. For his seventh back-to-back appearance as an All-Star, Dwayne Wade will put his best game forward with the new Fly Wade 2 in Varsity Royal/Midnight Navy. Hyperfuse upper along with a Lunarlon midsole, the lightweight ultra responsive design perfectly complement to Wade’s style of play. The same goes for Carmelo Anthony, who joins Wade on Team East, marking the fifth time he’s on the All-Star roster. For his power plays and explosive rushes through the opposition, Jordan Brand created the Jordan Melo M8, also in Varsity Royal/Midnight Navy, with ample protection like a heel Max Air unit and Nike Zoom at the forefoot. Recently traded to the Los Angeles Clippers, Chris Paul will take to the court in Orlando as a member of Team West. Designed with a multitude of components such as Podulon technology, Phylon midsole, Cushlon upper, and Flywire overlay, Paul’s CP3.V might not only be the lightest CP3 edition, but the most advanced as well. In Gym Red colorway, Paul looks onto to defend West Coast’s All-Star Game title in his fifth consecutive All-Star appearance next month.
All Jordan Brand Signature Editions for the 2012 NBA All-Star Game will be available at retailers starting on Thursday, February 23rd.
