About Patrick Ma
“Patrick York Ma was born in Brussels, Belgium and at the age of 4 years moved to the United States. On a whim he enlisted in the US Army at 18 and after jumping out of various wheeled and flying machines, shooting machine guns, blowing things up, wearing a lot of green-colored clothes and other army stuff, went to art school. Patrick received his BA in Art at the University of California Santa Cruz and an MFA in 3D Arts at San Jose State University. Currently residing in the San Francisco Bay Area, Patrick works in his studio on a variety of projects and designs pretty much whatever he feels like. His wide breadth of creations are used and collected all over the world.

Patrick’s signature character line – the I.nsurgents W.ilderness G.ruppo – was born in his sketch book on a Xmas day flight to London in 2000. Given sentience by mysterious alien beings, the I.W.G. are a feisty and rebellious underground group of self-aware animals fighting against any humans that have killed, exploited their kind and/or polluted their habitats. As the I.W.G. adapt to their new-found intelligence, they often struggle with the same temptations and failings of their enemies. The I.W.G. are cute yet decidedly deadly, and their narrative can be described as Che meets Animal Farm.

Patrick is inspired by pulp science fiction, childhood stories and TV shows featuring anthropomorphic characters, Mid-Century Modern and Mod pop culture. The I.W.G. are featured under his Rocket World label and a portion of all sales are donated to the various non-projfit Wildlife Conservation Groups he supports. His favorite color is green and he often disappears to remote corners of the world.”

A.Okay Official’s Gallery adopts MUTTS for the weekend of 5/1/2009 – 5/3/2009

http://mail.google.com/mail/?ui=2&ik=53d4d9ac73&view=att&th=120c925780bd1104&attid=0.2&disp=inline&realattid=f_ftp817v34&zw

“The MUTT Show” boasts an artist line up of some of the top international designer vinyl customizers in the scene today. The show serves to showcase this extreme talent while also introducing the new DIY toy “mutt” with a bang. From animal to vehicle, each artist brings a completely unique interpretation and approach to the toy’s shape. Fresh from NYC, the show is “RELOADED” for it’s stop at A.Okay Official. All new customs join the already killer line up making this an event not to miss. One weekend only!

The idea behind MUTT was to create a D.I.Y. that you could not only customize, but could custom build. MUTT, appropriately named, is just that. You can mix and match any accessories, giving you more options on the D.I.Y. side of things than were previously available. The “shell” itself is an ambiguous shape that lends itself to go in any direction you would want to take it. More pics after the jump.

* Opening reception: May 1, 2009 6-10pm

* Show runs through: May 3, 2009

* MixMedia Group DJs and refreshments by Red Stripe, Nos & Fuze Continue reading

Exhibit Review by Orange Beautiful: “the weekend :: Shawnimals + rain = awesome”

I don’t know about you, but I had a pretty chill weekend. Since it rained pretty much all day Saturday, and most of the day Sunday, I was “forced” to stay inside and relax. No arguments here.

But, before the rain came, Jw and I ventured out on Friday night and caught the opening reception of the Chronicles of Professor Fliggins at one of our favorite shops in Chicago, A.Okay Official (3270 N. Clark Street). The show featured new work from the awesome-ness that is shawnimals – a Chicago company that I first found out about (read: fell in love with) back in 2005, when I bought one of these guys at the DIY Trunk Show.

Assembly Line and A.Okay Official presents “Slow Burning” – Jan 17, 2008

ARTISTS’ FORMERLY KNOWN AS FULL TANK

ASSEMBLY LINE:

An assembly line is a manufacturing process in which interchangeable parts are added to a product in a sequential manner to create a finished product. It’s an arrangement of tools, and workers in which a product is assembled by having each perform a specific, successive operation on an incomplete unit as it passes by in a series of stages organized in a direct line. Creating art is the act that unites us, exhibiting art as a collaboration is the act that defines us. Our intention is not solely focused on the product , but we work on developing and strengthening each individual artist’s talents.

Kaws @Gering Lopez Gallery

KAWS
November 6 – December 23, 2008
@Gering Lopez Gallery
730 Fifth Avenue
Between 56th and 57th Streets
New York, NY 10019

Out here in NYC, 3k miles west out in SF, down south in old LA, across the seas where the Queen is still running shit, over to Asia where a slide kung-fu chop will take off ones head and pretty much everywhere on the planet, there are mobs of fiends dripping wet over KAWS. I cannot say I blame them in the least. I mean the guy has been getting up hard in an undisputable fashion for well over a decade. He is by no means one of these 1-time, 5-points throw-ups kings. KAWS was pushing the bounds of street artwork and graffiti long before most of these paper pushers were mixing their first batch of paste. Long before it was coined as ‘street art’. More pics and information after the jump.
