KAWS Companion Float Coming to Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade

The Macy’s Day Parade is one of New York City’s most honored and anticipated events of the American holiday season. If you’ve slept through it in the past years, you might want to stay awake for it this year, as artist KAWS has been tasked with creating a float for the parade. Fresh off the launch of his “The Nature of Need” exhibition in Hong Kong as well as his sit down interview with Hypebeast, KAWS plans to use his signature Companion character with hands tightly clasped over his eyes as the float that will rise high above the street as a balloon. KAWS follows in the steps of other artists in the past such as Tom Otterness, Jeff Koons, Takashi Murakami, and even Tim Burton.

Highlighted by its ever increase in importance, Hong Kong International Art Fair is set to open this Thursday, May 17th. To coincide with the multitude of festivities, exhibitions, and gallery openings, several notable artist will also take part, including Brian Donnelly, or better known as KAWS, at the newly established Galerie Perrotin Hong Kong. Titled The Nature of Need, the exhibition will be KAWS’ first solo exhibition in Asia. In addition, its the debut event for Galerie Perrotin Hong Kong, the Parisian gallery’s newest outpost. In person to celebrate this milestone for KAWS and Galerie Perrotin was Edison Chen and several other local celebrities . There were fellow artists as well, including a rare appearance by Takashi Murakami, who’s represented by the gallery too.

Concentrating on KAWS’ latest paintings, the exhibit is a contrast between both the familiar and the unfamiliar. Dominating on one side is CHUM, the Michelin Man-inspired caricature. And while its been a staple at majority of KAWS’ shows in the past, the contrast silhouette, heighten by the cropped canvas’ contours brought about a hint of menacing stature. The same goes with several other works, including an expansive group of 50 vertical paintings, each at a domineering height of 7 feet by 1 foot in width. The overall ambience is one to challenge audience to go beyond the common perceptions of KAWS’ works.

The Nature of Need by KAWS will be on view at Galerie Perrotin Hong Kong from now till June 30th.

KAWS “Nature of Need” Exhibition at Galerie Perrotin Hong Kong – Recap

KAWS “Nature of Need” Exhibition at Galerie Perrotin Hong Kong - Recap

Just last night we presented our interview with Brooklyn artist Kaws about his past and his recent collaboration with Ikepod on a watch. Today his new exhibition opened its doors in Hong Kong, at the newly opened Galerie Perrotin.

Staying true to his style, Kaws presents interesting new formats of his work at the “Nature of Need” exhibition in Hong Kong this week. From works split into multiple canvas’, to interesting canvas forms, adapting to his work, the exhibition offers Kaws fans and collectors something to look forward to.

“Separated into two distinct areas, the main room showcased the new series of vertical “plank” canvases. Measuring 7 foot in height, each piece represents a slice of emotion & action with a “less is more” motif. Like Damien Hirst’s Sliced Cows which portray life and death, these animated slices explore the ironies of our desires. With simple gestures, the series blends and evolves two bodies of works – his ground breaking tondo installation which premiered at the 2011 Armory and his recent solo at Honor Fraser.

The second room brings together a sampling of KAWS’ other works. At the center is the Chain of Command canvas where the abstract meets precision, creating a unique composition that induces a vague sense of recognition by drawing on both the NY-based artist’s roots in graffiti as a young adult and his first job working in the field of animation. We also see a set of 40 inch tondos, one of which contains the installation painting he created for his recent solo at the High Museum in Atlanta.”

The exhibition opens tonight and runs until June 30th, 2012.

A Conversation With Kaws

Kaws x IKEPOD Launch Event at colette 02 A Conversation With Kaws

On the event of the Kaws + IKEPOD launch event at colette, we had the chance to chat with the legendary artist on matters of his past, present and future. In addition to colette, the IKEPOD watches are now available at Gurus Shop in Hong Kong (A2-A3 G/F 67 Sing Woo Road Happy Valley).

Let’s start with your backstory – Where did the name KAWS come from?

The name KAWS came from graffiti, simply from letters I like, but you know eventually, I’m realizing that I like it because you can’t attach anything to it. I mean, just the word KAWS didn’t exist in the vocabulary. It became a good way to use that to make people look at the work.

At what point did you realize this was going to be more than just tagging walls and hitting billboards?

It wasn’t important to me when I was a young graffiti artist to think about a bigger picture. I was just making work… and it led me to many opportunities. Step by step it grew. But at that time I would never have thought of my life like that: “I’m gonna do this and this and this…” I don’t think you can even plan successfully to do something like that. So I just enjoyed it for what it was. And I just enjoy this for what it is.

'Death of Street Art' Mural by Sever

An all star line-up of graffiti writers is in Detroit at the moment for the Detroit Beautification Project. One of the most interesting pieces to have gone up until now is by artist Sever. Entitled the ‘Death of Street Art’, where a casket is being carried by Twist, Os Gemeos, Shepard Fairey, Banksy, Futura, and Kaws. A true statement of the current market and scene? Certainly an interesting piece and strong statement.
