The Making Of The KAWS x IKEPOD Horizon Watch Video | By Philip Andelman

Watchmaker IKEPOD underwent a revamping of its product line this year, highlighted by this redesigned Horizon model created with the help of world-renowned street artist KAWS. Seeing his signature flourishes on the dial, it’s no surprise to learn that KAWS himself was personally responsible for the design, providing a healthy dose of cartoon style to the titanium-encased timepiece. IKEPOD has released a short video documenting the painstaking steps in the construction of the watch. Directed by Philip Andelman, the clip is not only mesmerizing, it also goes a long way toward justifying the special-edition Horizon’s extravagant $14,000 price tag. via: HODINKEE

2012 White Columns Benefit Exhibition & Auction

This very month Manhattan’s White Columns is hosting a special exhibition and live auction to benefit the non-profit gallery. Known for providing support and exposure for countless up-and-coming artists since its inception in 1970, the West 13th Street location is currently hosting a silent auction featuring works from more than 80 artists, including the KAWS work seen here. A live auction for select works and cocktail party are set for May 12 at 7PM with tickets for the event on sale now.

IKEPOD: The Horizon by KAWS Video

Ahead of its official debut at colette on May 1, IKEPOD and Kaws have unveiled the planned collaboration that finds the two delving into the world of horology – also known as the scientific measuring of time. The adjoining video sees cameras entering the IKEPOD factory where the viewer is treated to the precise, and at times whimsical aspect that goes into making watches. Serving as a teaser for the unveiling in Paris, the four different chronographs offered are surely going to fly off the shelves.

Kaws will not only open a new exhibition in Hong Kong, his Original Fake label, that he does in cooperation with Medicom Toy, has released new product this week as well. As part of their Spring/Summer 2012 Collection, Original Fake presents a series of denim tote bags and messenger bags. The washed denim uppers in black and indigo, are complemented with Kaws Chompers detailing. The bags are now in stock in the OF online store.

Paris gallerist Emmanuel Perrotin will open a new gallery space in Hong Kong soon. If course he wants to open with a bang and thus chose to present new work by Brooklyn artist Kaws. The Kaws ‘The Nature of Need’ exhibition will open in Hong Kong on May 15, 2012, and run until June 30, 2012.

Original Fake has dropped a couple of nice bucket hats for this Spring/Summer 2012 season. The two hats bear some extremely familiar motifs from KAWS including the X Eyes and Chomper Teeth circle. Each hat comes in two solid colors, black and blue, in a nice chambray fabric. Both hats are now available at the Original Fake web shop.

KAWS x IKEPOD Horizon Watch

Long associated with industrial designer wunderkind Marc Newson, watch maker IKEPOD is getting ready to launch its 2012 edition Horizon watch but with an interesting disposition. In continuing its affiliation between art and timepiece, IKEPOD partnered with Brooklyn-base artist , better known to the world as KAWS, for the latest Horizon design.  Penned by specifically for IKEPOD, the new dial face is an amalgamation of signature works.  Measured at 44mm in diameter and machined out of a titanium block, the watch is driven by ETA 2892 movement with a retail price of US$ 14,000.  Limited in numbers, the watch will be available soon at Westime in Los Angeles and other IKEPOD retailers. via: Hodinkee
