Custom MUTTs by Lana Crooks and Max Bare

squids-ahoy-small

Much like the iconic Sy Sperling, the curators of Chicago’s A. Okay Official gallery practice what they preach. So here’s a post dedicated to A. Okay’s Lana Crooks and Max Bare, who’ve made it possible for you to see a litter of custom MUTTs this weekend. I love how Lana blends her signature plush squids with different plastic and vinyl platform toys. And Max’s “You Fuck with One of Us…” MUTT promises engaging viewing from all angles. The opening reception begins May 1st at 6PM and the show runs just through May 3rd, so get on it midwest toy fans.

About Lana Crooks

We begin the first custoMONDAY of 2009 with a first for the series: plush. And who better to kick things off than full-time plushinator, Lana Crooks? As the proprietor of Crookedart, Lana spends her time between freelance illustration, costume and set design for film and TV, visual design for retail and, of course, making unique soft sea creatures and skeletons. Over the past couple months, we’ve blogged about her pieces in group and solo shows. Lana’s work has been shown at A.Okay Official (where she is also a curator), Get Knifed Gallery and Gallery1988, to name a few. You can view her creations 24/7 online at Tor Gallery. The best place to keep tabs on the busy artist is at her Crooked Art blog, and if you like what you see, you can pick up her plushes in LA at Munky King. Or, you could win one right now. Which brings us to…

Crooked Critters Unleashed November 1st

“Lana, a self proclaimed ‘plushinator’, creates illustrative works with fabric. They are soft sculptures with an attitude. From plush that fit in the palm of your hand to the larger than life, each has been injected with a bit of twisted humor, a dash of whimsy and a whole bunch of cotton fiber. Her pieces are not cuddly throw pillows, most hang on the wall, fixed in place, while others are in fact content to sit on your couch. This exhibit showcases Lana’s new hand-made and one-of-a-kind works.  Crooks’ Crooked Critters opens November 1st 2008 and will be up for viewing until November 30th at A.Okay Official in Chicago, IL.”
