Tinshed: Home Rebuilt from Shreds of Scrappy Shack

[ By WebUrbanist in Architecture & Houses & Residential. ]

rebuilt upcycled industrial building

In a sleepy suburb of Sydney, Australia, long since taken over by mainly-one-story houses, sat a disused metal-sided shed. An ad hod affair, it was a rare leftover of what was once an industrial neighborhood, destined for demolition but instead converted into a strange new home.

The newly-reconstituted building dubbed ‘Tinshed’  by Raffaello Rosselli (images by Mark Syke) is made from the metal of the old abandonment. It is still pockmarked, with a haphazard surface that slips between gray, green, white and red – its panels overlapping in odd and seemingly chaotic patchwork patterns. Now, however, it these frame a few more oddities, like windows for the first time in the site’s life.

Inside, the building has immaculate flat white walls and crisp curved surfaces, reflecting its fresh purpose as a studio (on the first floor) dwelling and office space (on the second level). The juxtaposition of interior and exterior is fitting, as the entire structure is itself a strange addition to its surroundings.

Lullaby Factory: Fanciful Installation for Children’s Hospital

[ By Steph in Art & Installation & Sound. ]

Lullaby Factory 1

Children at London’s Great Ormond Street Hospital can enter a secret courtyard, stand beside a convoluted system of copper pipes and horns, and listen to the sound of soft lullabies. This musical art installation was created by Studio Weave to fill a narrow, otherwise unusable space created by the construction of an adjacent building.

Lullaby Factory 2

Inspired by the pipes and drainage systems that already cover the brick facade of the historic hospital building, Lullaby Factory creates visual interest, pays tribute to the 19th century origins of the structure and provides a comforting function for young patients.

Lullaby Factory 3

The installation reaches 10 stories high and is made of metal pipes in shades of silver, gold, copper and bronze; some of the components were recovered from a decommissioned hospital boilerhouse. Patients who can’t make their way outside into this magical little world between buildings can listen via radio from their rooms.

The installation will remain in place until the demolition of the aging building, scheduled for 2028. Say the designers, “Our aim for this project was to re-imagine the Southwood façade as the best version of itself, accepting and celebrating its qualities and oddities; and rather than hiding what is difficult, creating something unique and site specific.”

Sleek Internet Logos Echo Metal-Etched Japanese Cameras

[ By WebUrbanist in Design & Graphics & Branding. ]

camera style logos

There is something simply elegant about type-embossed metal – in part the association with classic high-end manual cameras. This logo series takes that typology and applies it to a series of contemporary companies.

Antrepo was inspired by brands like Canon, Nikon, Pentax and Minolta, greatly impressed by how simple (effectively logo-free) lettering made a bold and compelling statement in each case.

camera inspired internet logos

From the firm: “Canon AE-1, Nikon FTn, Ashai Pentax ESII, Minolta XG-1 – these cameras are some of the Japanese 35mm SLR cameras from the vintage ’70s and ’80s, the “Made in Japan” era, when Japan set the global standard of producing quality.”

In these remakes (featuring Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest, Google, YouTube and more) some of the typographic styles and logo figures are still present, but in every case there is something breath-taking about the simplification to a monochrome, black-on-steel look. Not to mention: this also follows the existing apparent trend toward re-simplifying logos throughout online industries.

Penny Wise: 12 Cool Copper-Clad Buildings

[ By Steve in Architecture & Cities & Urbanism. ]

copper_clad_main
Copper’s fiery glow, relative abundance and famed durability have served civilization well for countless centuries. The metal‘s many attributes have also endeared it to architects of all ages, from all ages. Now a new breed of urban designers have warmed to copper‘s practical beauty, employing it to clad buildings of all sizes and why not: it doesn’t just make cents.

//hapo Museum – Tshwane, South Africa

The //hapo Museum (“//hapo” means “hope” or “dream” in the Khoi language) was designed by GAPP, Mashabane Rose Architects and MMA to showcase over 3 billion years of South African history. The 11,000-square-meter (118,405 sq ft) building complex is clad with custom-made copper panels that are meant to age naturally, displaying a rich patina in response to the effects of sun, wind and weather.

As the centerpiece of the Freedom Park located in Tshwane, near Pretoria, the //hapo Museum’s core design concept is meant to echo that of a traditional healer’s garden with faux rock outcrops enclosing story-telling areas. “With walls and roof all clad in copper sheeting,” state the architects, “the ‘outcrop’ will, with time, rust to green and merge with the natural landscape.”

Fujitsubo Beauty Parlor – Tokyo, Japan

Should not a beauty parlor itself be beautiful? Call it an exercise in zen philosophy if you like but the Fujitsubo (“barnacle” in Japanese) beauty parlor in Tokyo’s trendy Omotesando district is gorgeous any way you slice it. Credit Japanese architects Archivision Hirotani Studio with this exciting example of copper cladding applied continuously from rooftop to ground level.

Copper sheeting laid in an overlapping shingle pattern climbs the parlor’s triple-pyramid roof in horizontal layers while the vertical walls show off the traditional staggered brickwork design to best advantage. Bright and reflective when applied, the copper is expected to age incrementally to degrees dependent upon the varying amounts of sunlight and rain received at different areas of the structure.

Evesham Leisure Centre – Worcestershire, England

The Evesham Leisure Centre in Worcestershire, England, was designed by Limbrick Limited: Architecture and Design (now part of Roberts – Limbrick Architects) and opened in late 2009. The complex features two swimming pools, a climbing wall, a 100-station fitness room and a beauty salon but it was the building’s striking sea-green copper-clad exterior that garnered it the Vale of Evesham Civic Society’s Merit Award for 2011.

In keeping with Evesham’s long, intimate and occasionally tempestuous relationship with the River Avon which runs through (and occasionally into) the town, the architects chose to apply pre-patinated copper cladding to portions of the building so that its final tinting would be set from the start. As copper is the longest-lasting exterior construction component in use today, the decision to “go green” from the get-go is perfectly understandable.

Waipolu Gallery and Studio – Oahu, Hawaii

Completed in 2010, the Waipolu Gallery on the Hawaiian island of Oahu was designed by Peter Bohlin of Bohlin Cywinski Jackson, with “Dirty Penny™” copper cladding provided by Zahner of Kansas City. Stately, subdued but possessed of an ageless solidity, the structure appears as if it grew naturally out of the island’s primordial volcanic substrate.

By installing pre-patinated copper, the Waipolu Gallery gets a jump start on the long road to antique verdigris while in the meantime, shows respect for the serious and subdued tone required by a facility of the Waipolu Gallery’s reputation.

Metal Heads: Sculptures Made of Movable Type & Hardware

[ By Steph in Art & Sculpture & Craft. ]

Sculptor Dale Dunning has been casting the same genderless face in all different kinds of materials for over a decade – placing it on its side, cutting it into ribbons and surrounding it with leaves. Among the most recent incarnations is a series of masks and heads made of movable type and thousands of tiny bits of hardware.

Each tiny little piece is painstakingly put in place to follow the contours of this face, sometimes sanded, the contrasting rough and smooth textures giving it even more dimension. Other heads consist of tiny bolt and washers, each welded to the other.

“The head that has been featured in my work for the last 13 years is a generic, simplified form not specific to gender, devoid of detail, resembling an egg. The head is universally recognized, easy to identify with. We live in our heads, see, feel, and experience the world in our head. It serves as the foundation upon which I can develop various paths to explore.”

See lots more of Dunning’s work at his blog.

Treat Yo Self with Festive Dresses and Coats

Major events are coming up in the next couple of weeks. 2011 has been a roller coaster year for many, so why not end it with a bang? We’ve got 3 great party dresses (yup! a new filter for your shopping ease) plus 3 sharp toppers to throw on when you are en route to your festivities and back. All options trump using your date’s suit jacket, and each of these outfits offer a situation-appropriate amount of glitz.

Let’s start with above: You’ve got a company holiday party and you want to look pretty and polished but also confident and not overly sexy. We are far from experts on the topic of corporate stuffy workplaces considering that anything goes here at Karmaloop, as long as you look your best version of you. That said, we can’t imagine any office party that would make the Clarissa Jacquard Dress look out of place (certainly not ours!). This updated version of BB Dakota‘s 2010 holiday frock is figure flattering and features on-trend colors. For a structured dress like this, add a little contrast and edge with a tailored leather jacket like the Lola Biker Jacket by Plastic Island.

Next up we’ve got your best friends house party (a non-ugly sweater party — we’ve got different outfit suggestions for that). Want to look cute for Instagram pics and charm the pants off that friend of a friend you’ve been crushing on? Look no further than the Lynch Dress by Lucca Couture. This take on the two-tone dress is fun and flirty with a textured sheen on the skirt and a fitted top. I think a great complement to the simple colors of this dress is the olive green of the Margaux Fur Detail Jacket, also by Plastic Island. Plus the fur trim adds some luxury, especially when you pair the getup with a mixed metal statement necklace!

Finally, the dress events to end all over the top dress events: New Year’s Eve! Turn heads in the Golden Leaf Dress from *LA Boutique, a one shouldered mini with a regal sequined leaf pattern. Add the faux fur Braden Coat by BB Dakota and you’ll look like such a star people will be asking for your autograph.
