Small Worlds: Strange & Shocking Miniature City Scenes

[ By WebUrbanist in Art & Sculpture & Craft. ]

surreal model architecture

There is no unifying theme to these surreal depictions of urban architecture and landscapes, save perhaps their imaginative improbability and singular creator, Frank Kunert, a German photographer and his bemused sense of wonder.

surreal crafted city scenes

Each is at once clearly a model yet quite lifelike, lovingly crafted, painted and photographed. Some show impossibilities seemingly for shock value alone, while others contain a subtle message – some commentary on politics, religion, television or other aspects of everyday life.

surreal architecture model images

The resulting scenes question function, accessibility and the role of architecture, exterior and interior design in shaping both public and private experience.

surreal structural montage scapes

It is also worth noting, too, that none of them are post-edited – they are created sans Photoshop and shot with an analog camera. The process and product are closely related, and each creative choice is made carefully by hand.

Abandoned Star Wars Film Sets in the Tunisian Desert

Abandoned Star Wars Film Sets in the Tunisian Desert

Visual artist and filmmaker Rä di Martino visited the Tunisian desert in order to capture the abandoned film set of the legendary Star Wars film series. The project began when the photographer learned it was common practice to leave film sets without tearing them down to let them crumble over time like ancient ruins. With a bit of luck and the help of a local police station, Martino was able to find what remains of Luke Skywalker’s childhood home and capture what you see above.

LIFE Opens up their Archives and Explores Skateboarding in 1965 NYC

LIFE Opens up their Archives and Explores Skateboarding in 1965 NYC

Skateboarding, LIFE opined in 1965, is “the most exhilarating and dangerous joyriding device this side of the hot rod. A two-foot piece of wood or plastic mounted on wheels, it yields to the skillful user the excitements of skiing or surfing. To the unskilled it gives the effect of having stepped on a banana peel while dashing down the back stairs. It is also a menace to limb and even to life.” Above, LIFE looks back at the early, thrillingly anarchic days of a quintessentially American sport and pastime that, over the years, has been embraced by millions around the world while still, somehow, retaining its rebel cred. The stunning black-and-white images serve as a juxtaposition between old world hijinks and fun, and this new and invigorating way to navigate New York City terrain.

Check out the entire set of images here.

Vertical Horizon: Urban Photographs Turn City Upside Down

[ By WebUrbanist in Art & Photography & Video. ]

vertical horizon hong kong

Hong Kong has to be one of the most-photographed cities on Earth, but these shots present a rarely-seen perspective by documentarians or pedestrians … unless they look straight up.

vertical urban photo shoot

From Vertical Art Space: “Romain Jacquet-Lagreze is a French graphic artist with a Masters in multimedia and art from East Paris University. His interest in photography began during his period of working in Los Angeles and Tokyo, and subsequently blossomed into a passion after his arrival in Hong Kong.”

vertical urban built environment

His Vertical Horizon series emphasizes the vast scale of tall structures, but also the “heterogeneous character” of the built environment – traditional alongside modern, scrappy versus refined, small set against large.

vertical city landscape photos

While some of his images are taken from the top down, or at an angle, many of the most powerful ones are straight-up vertical captures. Somehow, these more predictable approaches lack the striking gravitas of their deceptively-flat  cousins.
