As Seen on TV: Floor Plans from Famous Television Series

A talented cast, backed by brilliant directors and writers, makes you feel like part of the action – not just through the actors telling a story, but also via the familiar spaces they regularly occupy in each episode (sometimes for years).

Iñaki Aliste Lizarralde is an artist and designer who painstakingly analyzes and draws out the rooms your favorite characters and their tales occupy, be they the charming sitcom Golden Girls or the macabre drama of Dexter.

And while our minds generally complete the picture for us, many of these famous dwellings do not really exist in a complete way, and some are never fully shown because of camera, entrance and exit placements, leaving our imagination to fill in the gaps.

In some cases, the action spans more than a single apartment, as in Friends where it is ultimately about two neighboring units and the hallway in between.

In other cases, like the Simpsons, seeing the plan makes you realize how simple it is in a fictional world that is wacky in so many ways – it is the backdrop, not a character itself. In the end, real life or otherwise, everyone needs doors, floors, windows and walls. Check out DeviantArt for a closer look or to buy a print.

Photoshop in Real Life: Portrait Series Takes Tools Literally

[ By WebUrbanist in Design & Graphics & Branding. ]

photoshop realism

Anyone who has used Adobe products, Photoshop or otherwise, knows that they have necessarily become quite creative in naming some of their more abstract, surreal and unusual functions.

photoshop based manipulation series

Flora Borsi of Budapest, Hungary, is a photographer and photo editor who has explored these meanings in return, taking them back out of the digital realm and applying them to ‘real life’ situations.

Through turns of phrase (‘Convert to Smart Object’) and other twisted interpretations, this series of portraits is an exploration of self, exhibition of abilities and simply fun series of mildly manipulated photos.

photo manipulations historical portraits

Her other series show off her capacity to understand and reproduce historical styles, but also to take and subvert visual expectations, in turn silly, serious and in some cases quite macabre.

Airborne Architecture: 12 Images of Flying French Houses

[ By WebUrbanist in Art & Photography & Video. ]

Context – that is the key to taking the ordinary and making it amazing in this series of displaced homes soaring up from forgotten streets of Paris. The results float like an intentionally mundane version of Pixar’s UP, or a modern-day urban Wizard of Oz Tale.

Laurent Chehere picks a range of dwellings, but most are dilapidated and seem perhaps sad in their crowded urban environment. She takes photographs of local buildings, tents and trailers, then photoshops their surroundings into something radically new.

Some are slathered in graffiti – others shown with clotheslines in everyday use. To this, she adds a few whimsical gestures – power lines, strings of lights, earthward ladders and other odds and ends to tie down each piece like a balloon and keep it from floating away.

One consequence of ripping these from the ground and setting them in the sky is simply an enhanced focus on an otherwise-connected building. In these isolating images, townhouses become standalone works, and we start to see them differently.

Akomplice Announces Magic Plant Collection

akomplice mp

Akomplice continues to set the bar higher with each line they drop, and today they keep it moving with “Magic Plant Series”. The line is centered around the wonderful world of botany, fitting as we near the spring & summer months. Some of my favorites are the “Opiate,” “Absinth” tees, as well as the 5-panel cap. They kept it fresh the whole way through, especially love that there was no need to throw a cannibus leaf on a t-shirt. Peep some of the collection below, but make sure to hit their site for the full lineup.

Villa Savoye: Classic Corbu House Comes to Life in LEGO

[ By WebUrbanist in Gadgets & Geekery & Technology. ]

One of the most iconic buildings of the 20th Century, the Villa Savoye by Le Corbusier outside of Paris, France has long been a symbol of the International Style in Modern Architecture – now one you can rebuild at home in LEGO form.

In fact, a model version is perhaps the best way to understand this structure, as its accomplishments are not all visible from ground-level photographs – particularly the compelling sectional progression and three-dimensionally-complex rooftop deck.

The structure embodies Corbu’s core Five Points regarding residential design, being (1) supported by structural columns and elevated to create space below, (2) topped by a garden, reclaiming additional outdoor space displaced by the building, (3) open floor plans, (4) horizontal fenestration and (5) freely-designed facades. Of the Architecture Landmark Series by LEGO, this may be the most instructive model to date for young aspiring architects (ages 12 and up, that is!).

Interior Aerial Photos: Room Portraits Show Personal Stories

[ By WebUrbanist in Design & Fixtures & Interiors. ]

Day in and day out we see the same rooms in the same ways. But what if you could get a unique new view on your home, office, school or favorite coffee shop … from above?

Menno Aden gives this photo series a special vantage point that forces the viewer to rethink the contents of everyday spaces in Berlin set in a new visual context.

His subjects are intentionally conventional, including classrooms, supermarkets, bars and parking lots, each recognizable and yet somehow distinctly different when seen from a fresh angle.

There is a lot one could read into this approach – the god-like or voyeur-worthy top-down perspective is definitely different. Regardless, with new camera technologies these seemingly-impossible perspectives become a fascinating reality.

All You Own: Can You Fit Your World into One Photograph?

[ By WebUrbanist in Design & Fixtures & Interiors. ]

Many of us possess so much stuff it can be hard to quantify what lurks between all of our cupboards, closets, drawers and more. One Swedish photographer set out to document just how many (or few) things a young person today can (and does) accumulate.

The result is this revealing photo series of people with their worldly possessions, shot by Sannah Kvist in the intimate settings of each owner’s space. The set was inspired by a move by Sannah, but also a reaction to an older generation’s periodic assertion that young people cannot manage the same degree of conceptual minimalism or material self-constraint.

And while we may notbewhat we own (RENT songs aside), there is more to each pile and pose than sheer mass and volume – the collections each have a distinct personality, from the specific contents to the way they are composed.

Arguably analogous to the transition toward weighing more as individuals (thanks in part to cheaper, high-calorie fast foods), there is a way in which cheaper, low-quality furniture and other everyday objects makes it all too tempting to accumulate more than we need or even want without realizing it.
