Free Universal Construction Kit Bridges Generations of Toys

LEGOs, Lincoln Logs, Tinker Toys … what do they have in common? They each represent a universe of constructive possibilities, but each is incompatible with the next, like alien planets with their own unique atmospheres. Until now, that is.

With the advent of 3D printing technology, individuals can now print their own pieces and connect the dots (and logs and bricks) between ten disparate worlds of childhood fun: Lego®, Duplo®, Fischertechnik®, Gears! Gears! Gears!®, K’Nex®, Krinkles®, Bristle Blocks®, Lincoln Logs®, Tinkertoys®, Zome®, ZomeTool® and Zoob®.

Adapters can be downloaded from Thingiverse.com and other sharing sites as a set of 3D models in .STL format, suitable for reproduction by personal manufacturing devices like the Makerbot (an inexpensive, open-source 3D printer).

“The Free Universal Construction Kit is a collection of nearly 80 adapter bricks that enable complete interoperability between ten popular children’s construction toys. By allowing any piece to mate with any other, the Kit encourages totally new forms of intercourse between otherwise closed systems — enabling radically hybrid Constructivist play and the creation of heretofore impossible designs. (For example, one of the pieces adapts Legos® to Tinkertoys®.) As with other grassroots interoperability remedies, the Free Universal Construction Kit implements proprietary protocols in order to provide a public service unmet, or unmeetable, by corporate interests.”

Dudebox: Interview with Pete Fowler

Best known for his artwork for Welsh psychedelic rock band Super Furry Animals and his Monsterism toys, UK artist Pete Fowler recently invited Dudebox to his studio for a glimpse at his “monsterist” work. The two-minute video sees the artist speaking on his approach and inspiration while also touching on his upcoming collaboration with Dudebox. Dubbed “Pete Fowler and Friends”, the collaborative vinyl collectibles are due to hit retailers in the month of May.

Lot F Gallery: Return

Walking around Lot F Gallery, a space inconspicuously tucked away in Boston’s Chinatown area, the urban vibes flowing from the exhibition Return are heavier than the deep bass of a dub-step song. Return functions cohesively as a collective vision of urban street art, and yet each piece is distinctively the artist’s own unique approach and aesthetic. Todd Robertson, Will Long, Percy Fortini-Wright and Jamie O’Neill, the four Boston-based artists participating in Return, cite similar influences for their current work, including graffiti, music, everyday observations and urban culture. “Some of the artists [Percy and Jamie] have been painting together for years and worked on mural projects,” said James Wormser, co-director of Lot F. The abstract paintings of Todd Robertson, compositionally arranged like “improvisational jazz,” make use of everyday found objects (picture anything from newspaper clippings, tickets and toy trucks to a flattened can of spray paint) that engage and resonate with the viewer. Jamie O’Neill has a realist approach in portraying urban settings, transporting the viewer to a place of tagged train cars and city streets. Sneaker retailer Gettry expands on their hamburger theme (which made its way onto a collaboration with ASICS earlier this year) in a two BEARBRICK release with MEDICOM TOY. The design features a number of colorful layers no different than your typical hamburger including all the fixings. Bread & Butter Berlin: WeSC x Medicom Toy Headphones And Bearbricks

We start bringing you the first interesting product previews from the Bread & Butter tradeshow, that took off in Berlin today. WeSC continues to bring interesting new headphone styles, but raised the bar and brought Medicom Toy into the mix. They presented a series of headphones in collaboration with the Japanese toy company, who produced matching Bearbricks, as well as some Medicom Fabrick canvas accessories. The WeSC headphones were already very popular before, but this is definitely a nice addition to the offering. Overall there will be 4 sets from this series.

Rotofugi x Formula Werks Toy Fetish T-shirts

Rotofugi continues to knock out cool collabs with no sign of slowing up. This time, they turn their attention from toy production with Squibbles Ink. to the shirts on your back with Formula Werks. The Toy Fetish shirt concisely sums up the situation with the statement “I have more toys than your kids.” Besides being a much more honest shirt than this one I spied last year at the Bay Area Collectible Toy Fair, the ROTO-X-FWX shirts allow complete customization from text color to shirt color. The shirts are available from S-4XL for $25 each.  Speaking of honest, Rotofugi also has a pair of shirts with their Honest Abe logo and “Chicago” and “Midwest” written in Japanese underneath. Midwesterners can also pick up a cool “It’s not all about NYC and LA: Chicago” shirt. Nice to see other art cities getting recognized. We want a San Francisco shirt.
