NEW NYC Graffiti book

Over 400 eye-popping photos provide a decade-long tour of graffiti in New York City. Walls, trucks, and subway cars are featured with graffiti by the crews X-Men, KD, TNB, 156, RIS, AOK, TC-5, FAME CITY, COD, XTC, TFP, MCI, IF, DYM, 718, TD4, SMART, TATS CRU, FLY-ID, GFR, AKB, and many more. Because New York City has made a concerted effort to remove graffiti from the city, the images captured here will never be seen again. Walls were repainted and some buildings were demolished, keeping graffiti crews working fast to keep ahead of the trend. The author worked even faster to capture their ephemeral efforts. If you have a fascination with urban life and colorful expression, this book is definitely for you.

KANYE…LUPE…and now…SHALA.

Blog post/story: Free music collection download
WEARESHALA.COM

Shala. emerges from behind the scene of the emerging and innovative Chicago art and music movement to deliver an amazing 9-track collection of free music downloads. His new album preview is a refreshing expression of where hip hop is finally headed: “Songs to Rap Along To” is a clever, honest and innovative prelude to his debut release: “…And Then Along Came Shala.”

Shala’s “Songs to Rap Along To” can be found for free download at weareshala.com. Weareshala.com is an online motion painting by Shala. himself. The collection features collaborations with Ninjasonik, Hollywood Holt, Mic Terror, and Sebastian of Ed Banger.

“Post-Kanye, it seems like every kid in Chicago is putting out ridiculously fly forward-looking, backward-glancing singles linked most significantly by large bass, quick tempos, smart lyrics and jokes for days. Shala Esquire of Chicago’s unsung Qualo did us all a favor by collecting all the new and new-ish joints in one place.” -The Fader Magazine

“I love what Chicago is doing, and this Shala. song “Molly Wop” is definitely what music is missing right now, so I’m playing it” -Terry Urban of TPPS (Shade45 Radio/XM Sirius Satellite Radio)

“ . . . Shala. may be leading the most important movement on Chicago’s hip-hop scene.  .  . These artists exist outside the stereotype of the hip-hop artist, yet they retain the edge and authenticity they need to be taken seriously and the business acumen needed to succeed in a tough industry.” -Chicago Sun-Times Continue reading

Alden for Blackbird Osgood Series Saddle Shoe

Alden for Blackbird Osgood Series Saddle Shoe

Selectism has a nice story on Blackbird’s latest in-house exclusive with Alden.

Seattle recognizes Mr. Frank Osgood as father of their public transportation system. Introducing a horse drawn trolley system in 1894, Osgood begins to further facilitate the movement of laborers and the pursuit of leisure in the city. Five years later, Osgood gave the horses a rest and introduced electric trolleys and Seattle is the first West Coast town to become fully modernized in this way.

The folks at Seattle’s Blackbird have great reverence for Osgood and his contributions to the public welfare of their home town. So much so, that they’ve produced a pair (as in two models) of shoes inspired by him. I like a quirky reading of history, and as such am willing to believe for a moment that public transportation is especially good for keeping shoes clean on the way to work.

Regardless of this somewhat dubious analysis of urban development, the shoes are very handsome (in my humble opinion). The above model is the Hayburner Saddle Shoe in #8 burgundy cordovan and black alpine grain leather. The second, after the jump, is the Leschi Picnic Saddle Shoe in black calf and navy blue suede. Think labor and leisure. Or, more simply, work and play.

P.S. The shoes are manufactured by Alden.

Curated by Arkitip: Incase x Evan Hecox iPhone Cases and Laptop Sleeves

Curated by Arkitip: Incase x Evan Hecox iPhone Cases and Laptop Sleeves

Artist and designer Evan Hecox displays his fascination with the urban landscape on Incase products for the sixth installment of Curated by Arkitip. Available today , the Evan Hecox series has been issued in three limited editions: London, New York and Tokyo. As the project’s first artist to present a series of products, Hecox brings to life nontraditional depictions of the famed cities and their associated national emblems on our signature MacBook Sleeve and iPhone Slider Case.

Drawing inspiration from the complexity of the modern metropolis, Hecox’s stylistic approach is based on the process of amplification as it affects form and color: breaking down the image, removing certain elements and emphasizing others. In his original artistry for Curated by Arkitip, Hecox filters the mundane into captivating illustrations of London, New York and Tokyo seemingly filled with narratives beyond the images themselves, and applies them to MacBook Sleeves. The Hecox Slider Cases complement the three Sleeves, bearing instantly recognizable national symbols of the three cities. Hecox re-imagined the symbols through his stylistic approach, resulting in artistic interpretations that are both familiar and new.

Make sure to check out the video chronicle on the collaboration here below!

The Hecox products for Curated by Arkitip are available now at Arkitip, better Incase retailers and select Apple stores.
