Nike Air Vortex VNTG – Fresh Mint – Voltage Cherry

Nike Air Vortex VNTG Fresh Mint Voltage Cherry

While the rest of Nike Sportswear’s V-Series retro runners are rapidly fading into our memories of 2011, the Nike Air Vortex seems poised for another lap this spring. Size? announced an exclusive VNTG Air Vortex for February just before another blue pair hit just a couple days ago, and now the above pictured release means that along with the Anthracite and orange joints we showed you just before the turn of the year, there’ll be at least four new pairs this quarter. Fresh Mint and Voltage Cherry come together on this newest look to give a crisp minty watermelon appeal that’ll keep you cool long into the summer. Get ready for the conditions outside to get brighter by reflecting the same springtime renewal with your sneaker wardrobe and grab these at select NSW retailers like Titolo.

Nike Air Max Light – OG vs. VNTG Comparison

Nike Air Max Light OG vs. VNTG Comparison

Rocking vintage kicks have become a popular method of capturing that true retro styling sought out by sneakerheads and hipsters alike, and so Nike began a controversial collection of ‘VNTG’ sneakers – that is, taking freshly manufactured models and giving them a vintage makeover. You can typically find these Nike VNTG models with softer suede, pre-yellowed midsoles and the 70′s Nike tongue label, but the recently released is hardly from that true ‘vintage’ era. In fact, it’s barely even an 80′s baby, as the Air Max Light (actually the Air Max II) was born just before the turn of the decade, sandwiched between the Air Stability (Stab) of ’88 and the iconic Air Max 90 (III) of ’90. It took eighteen years for the Light to see the light of day, with most of the great releases dropping as Euro exclusives and collaborations – most of the U.S. drops were available at chain retailers in crazy colorways and didn’t induce the excitement a true flagship Air Max would have.

Nike Sportswear finally decided to drop the two original Air Max Light colorways in late 2011, but in the oft-maligned ‘VNTG’ form, but it’s clear Nike got it down pat by pre-yellowing just the rear portion of the two-piece midsole (the rear was built with polyurethane, the forefoot with EVA, which resisted yellowing). Want to see for yourself? Sneaker News has for you a nice side-by-side comparison between the true original and the redone Retro, and you’ll quickly see that the OG has that two-toned yellowing with a truer aged appeal, down to the discolored thermoplastic straps, dingy mesh, and oxidation on the outsole. A picture says a thousand words, and we’ve got a ton of ‘em below, so check out this great Nike Air Max Light OG vs. VNTG comparison below and let us know what other Nike models you’d like to see with the ‘VNTG’ treatment.

Air Jordan 1 1994 Retro Autographed Pair on eBay

While the Air Jordan 1 is undoubtedly the signature sneaker from MJ with the biggest number of colorways, there still isn’t much that can touch the OG Bulls look. This pristine pair from 1994, the first time the sneaker saw a retro release, comes in the iconic White/Black/Red combo along with a little something extra across the heel area that pushes their collectible status over the top. That’s right, adding to the range of autographed heat we’ve been showing you from eBay is this first entry into the Air Jordan legacy, with Michael Jordan’s marking scrawled onto the back end of the shoe. ZAP! 27 Vintage Sci Fi Damsels In Distress

[ By Marc in Gadgets & Geek Art & History & Factoids & Technology & Futurism. ]

Vintage science fiction has as many damsels in distress as it has lurching robots and rubber-masked aliens. Despite the huge pantheon of films and novels about futuristic exploits, there’s always one thing that remains the same: There’s a beautiful woman who needs saving.

King Kong is likely the most famous woman-snatching creature in film, but he’s far from the only one. A quick tour of film posters from the last 40 years reveals an incredibly narrow artistic focus. Whether the creatures come from the middle of the earth, or a radioactive spill, or simply emerged from a silver shuttlecraft, the poster will always be the same.

It’s not possible that so many films, B-rated or not, would have such consistent and cliched art direction, right? Wrong. One must give credit to the marketing teams of the time; they knew what sold.

It’s no secret that a woman in trouble feeds directly into the adolescent boy’s biggest heroic fantasies. A damsel in distress, mixed with the right combination of special effects and mutant monsters, produces pure science fiction gold.

All a movie really needed in order to grab a young boy’s attention is a lot of latex masks, some billowing fog, and a women dressed in her finest. The lower the budget, the better.

Outrageous concepts abound in vintage sci fi films. These fun, over-the-top features were drowning in alien beasts and ray guns, and influenced an entire generation into loving space operas.

Some of the best posters hearken to the popular comics of the time. Epic, painted scene with larger than life characters were enough to lure any kid into stopping for a quick flick on a summer day.

It’s easy to feel a bit frustrated at the sheer number of these cliched works of cover art, but it’s also important to remember the audience they were targeting. Modern sensibilities are much more sensitive to the equality of women, though this wasn’t an entirely foreign concept to film audiences in the last few decades.

(Images via wheredangerlives, squidoo)

There are some women who exert a lot of power in these vintage films. Of course, the woman is either a deadly alien, or wearing some kind of futuristic bikini, or both… Maybe women empowerment was a bit foreign in these days. Baby steps!

Nike Blazer High Nylon VNTG – Electrolime

Nike Blazer High Nylon VNTG Electrolime

In our recent look at the ‘Gorge Green’ Nike Blazer High VNTG release, we noted that the unfinished nylon tongue is now a tonal match to the suede uppers for the first time in the series’ three years. Regular Sneaker News readers will know that’s not the only bit of fresh news regarding nylon on the Vintage Blazer, as this new Electrolime edition makes three after our preview of red and blue pairs back at the start of the month. With these, we’re instantly reminded of the variety of nylon Dunks we got in 2009 in what turned out to be a fond farewell to the Vandal as a regular part of the NSW core lineup, but perhaps these satiny Blazer Highs can fill the gap while we wait for new colorways on that strapped classic. Click through to see more of how Electrolime looks on ballistic nylon instead of the Foamposite material on which it’s been featured most prominently of late, and pre-order your pair of this February 2012 release right now with End.

Dimepiece Designs: The Drug & the Dream

Click here to view the embedded video.

Dimepiece Designs presented their Spring 2012 collection at a unique installation last month titled The Drug & the Dream, hosted by one of our Karmaloop iKons Iggy Azalea. This presentation explores the concept of escapism through psychedelic imagery, colorful designs, and the brand’s signature tongue-in-cheek graphics and slogans. Held at HVW8 Art + Design Gallery in LA, the show featured work from Marco Bhimani and Issac Bauman inspired by the collection, set to tunes curated by international DJ Franck Chevalier and LA “it-boy” BJ Panda Bear. Expect to see vintage inspired pieces with saturated floral prints and retro psychedelic graphics. We can’t wait for this new collection to drop!

Air Jordan VIII – Game Worn + Autographed by Michael Jordan

Air Jordan VIII Game Worn + Autographed by Michael Jordan

When it comes to the relative degree of “must-have” for Air Jordan releases we all know the OG’s will trump the retroes every time. Of course if the OG pair in question has somehow been blessed with the autograph of Michael himself, well then you’ve got an even better collection piece on your hands. Oh what’s that you say, it was actually worn by MJ during his path to greatness? That of course is the cream of the crop, and all of those elements come together on this , a beautiful original pair that has stood the test of time surprisingly well. Along with the game worn/autographed Air Jordan XI and Air Jordan IX that we featured previously, you could have yourself a pretty sizable collection of autographed MJ originals by now. So what are you waiting for? After you check out the images after the jump grab them now from kantorla on eBay.

Air Jordan IX ’45′ – Autographed & Game-Worn Display

Air Jordan IX 45 Autographed & Game Worn Display

The baseball portion of Michael Jordan’s sports career is one that most would probably want to look over, but despite not reaching levels of success and stardom as he did with basketball, Michael was still a competitor that trained hard to reach the pinnacle of excellence. Unfortunately, it didn’t take long for us to realize that slam dunks and sweet jumpers didn’t translate to frozen ropes and oppo-hitting, and once the MLB lockout in ’94 went in full swing, Michael decided to feed his insatiable appetite for competition in the sport he knew best (and merely went on to win three more NBA championships). Because Jordan’s time with the Birmingham Barons was so short-lived any Air Jordan products that were made for MJ during that tenure is considered quite rare, and this autographed, game-worn pair of PE Cleats in this sick display case certainly falls under that category. Just 45 displays exist, but you can bid on one by visiting this live auction from pdarmos on eBay.

Shopper’s Resolutions: Vintage in 2012

I’ve often professed my interest in vintage apparel, but with a short attention span and a lack of focus I have never been able to seriously scour the racks for a good find. We’ve heard countless reasons for buying vintage including the facts that it is resourceful, one-of-a-kind, and generally higher quality materials. Karmaloop is home to many bona fide vintage hunters, with many of them selling on Kazbah, Plndr, or Etsy, and I’m hoping that in 2012 I can learn some of their tricks. If you’re in the same camp as me, why not fulfill this sartorial promise with a New Year’s Eve dress? Great way to put your resolution to work! Here are some of our picks for satisfying party pieces, all from *Vintage Boutique.
