Spectral Studio: 20 Sq M Space Uses Light & Dark as Decor

[ By WebUrbanist in Design & Fixtures & Interiors. ]

illuminated apartment

In an Paris apartment with just over 200 square feet, it is almost impossible to imagine anything but the more bare essentials resulting a boring space. But that is where illumination enters the equation, flooding in to add depth and complexity to this abode. This, then, is a short story of light.

illumination study axon existing

The architects, Betillon | Dorval?Bory, examined the limited space available architecturally, but also scientifically, testing the type and quality of the natural light to be found (and then suggesting what should be carefully introduced) across the existing interior zones.

illuminate room two tone

A single wall was introduced, dividing the main bedroom area from daytime activity spaces like the kitchen, but not just (nor even primarily) as a visual barrier – it was intentionally and most-importantly designed to be a backdrop for two types of light.

illuminated night sleeping area

On the ‘night’ side: a diffused orange streetlamp glow of the after-hours city that we associate with evening, which washes the walls in a more monochromatic direction (suited for sleeping and showering). On the ‘day’ side, a pure all-purpose white of the kind found in active spaces like offices – one which allows us to see things in black and color as well (suited for cooking and gathering).

illuminated flat natural daylight

Notably, the ‘night’ side lights can also be turned off (or overpowered by daylight), allowing the entire place to ‘open’ into a single space. If there is a lesson to be learned here, it is that physical objects are not the only things that form (or inform) the nature of space. Spatial variety can come via intangible elements like illumination, which in turn can serve equally powerful functions in fleshing out a space – particularly a small place with little room for solid decor.

Revealing Historical Photos Show US White House Gutted

[ By WebUrbanist in Architecture & Public & Institutional. ]

white house remodel project

Imagine the state of it: the United States executive mansion after 150 years of continuous occupation. By this time, the already-aging White House had been retrofit with a maze of modern amenities like plumbing, electricity and heating – none of which this expansive estate was constructed to house.

white house historic interior

Per reporter Brian Resnick, sagging ceilings, scaffolding and supports had rendered the structure an unsanitary fire hazard by the late 1940s – some suggested scrapping it entirely and starting from scratch, but President Truman lobbied to keep and rehabilitate it.

white house reconstruction photos

As these amazing photographs from the National Archives & Truman Library illustrate, the entire interior had to be ripped out. Historically valuable materials and decor were meticulously cataloged and stored, and temporary steel columns and beams erected to keep the exterior from collapsing.

To get equipment like bulldozers inside and clear debris required disassembling machines to avoid bursting holes in the sides of the structure – rebuilding would have been cheaper and faster, but this careful treatment preserved irreplaceable pieces of US history.

In all rooms and on all levels, lathe, plaster, brick and mortar were laid bare, giving a unique one-time view – fortunately captured in photographs – into the hidden structure and secret architecture of the most important residence in America.

Chairs from Nowhere: Secret Table & Seats Hide in Shelves

[ By WebUrbanist in Design & Furniture & Decor. ]

Four chairs, one table, and they take up almost no space when not in use – yet not folding, flipping, stacking or complex mechanical maneuvers are needed to make it happen.

With very little hardware but a lot of creative thinking, Orla Reynolds (images by Mark Duggan) crafted As If From Nowhere as a final project for DIT in Furniture & Interior Design, but will hopefully be taking these pieces into mass production.

Why plural and not singular? As it turns out, you would not have to buy the full set of furniture – you could stick to just a bookcase with one chair, or double down for two tables and eight chairs.

Set as primary and secondary colors against a blank white backdrop, the function of the removable parts stands out while also accenting each bookcase.

Ghost Architecture: Building Demolition Photo Composites

[ By WebUrbanist in Architecture & Cities & Urbanism. ]

Philadelphia native Andrew Evans takes pictures that give a new perspective on the processes of urban deconstruction, showing before, during and after images of once-proud civic structures.

What really brings this haunting black-and-whites to life is that three-step aspect – not just the building being there and gone, with its surrounding context standing watch, but the short interstitial stays of demolition equipment, semi-demolished rooms and falling rubble along the way.

Prominent captures include: The National Building, destroyed to expand the Odd Fellows Temple, Pennsylvania Convention Center, the Pennsylvania Railroad power plant and the Philadelphia Convention Hall and Civic Center.

“Andrew Evans is an architect by training who is fascinated by construction and destruction alike. He is a lifelong Philadelphian and resides in southwest center city.” You can see more of his photos on Flickr. Side-note trivia: the destruction of Penn Station in New York City is part of what sparked the historic preservation movement in the United States – still, for better or for worse, many unique structures are still regularly demolished to this day.

Boutique Comic Shop Panel-Style Displays Pop Off the Page

Comics have come a long ways since the early days of Marvel and Detective Comics, but though tone, genres and superheroes in some cases have changed, one thing remains remarkably the same: the basic prototype format for laying out page.

Sure, it is distorted at times, broken open with artistic intention, but in this case it really comes to life in a new and different way, in the form of store displays both horizontally and vertically in this store called Tokyo’s Tokyo (you can guess where it is in Japan).

Plywood is layered up like pages while white recesses form slots and shelves for displaying merchandise – a fresh look far removed from the conventional white-boxed rows of graphic novels found at your corner comic shop.

And lest you think it will look less compelling with actual objects in place, you can see from the filled-in picture (below) just how well it works as items add dimension to the pages.

The result is dynamic, engaging, and turns a traditional shopping experience into a series of linear storylines, with colorful wares framed in white panes. It might not work for stocking a whole series worth of back issues, but it is a striking approach to showing off new books, novelties and accessories.

Fonts to Faces: 9 Personality-Rich Typographies as Portraits

[ By WebUrbanist in Design & Graphics & Branding. ]

As humans, we are programmed to anthropomorphize our surroundings. So what would happen if the letters on pages conveyed meanings others than the words they represented … say, actual (versus just typographic) faces?

In this Type Faces Project, Tiago Pinto takes familiar fonts, breaks them down into serif, sans-serif and miscellaneous, then assembles them to form caricatures based on inferred character traits.

Futura becomes a kind of excited science geek – forward-thinking optimist, perhaps. Times New Roman is, predictably, that stodgy old bottom-liner. And Baskerville is, well, quite the hound dog.

It should come as no surprise that WingDings (upper left above) is one weird-looking dude, or that Comic Sans (upper right above) is a hopelessly confused-looking loser.

[Mixtape] Asaad: #WHITE

Another project that dropped on 4/20 is Asaad’s latest, a double disc entitled WHITE. The project features DMC members Walt Fraze and Wyo along with fellow Philly native Tayyib Ali. Production credits include Sunny Norway, Ben Pramuk, Nascent & QB, Problem among others. As typical of Asaad, the tracks are packed with references to the finer things in life, but the power of the music doesn’t arise from the material items discussed, rather Asaad’s reflections on life. As a rising artist to watch, #WHITE is not the project to pass up.
